The country’s largest clean energy provider First Gen Corp. is in talks to supply at least 180 megawatts of power to data centers in the Philippines, First Gen Energy Solutions, Inc. president and chief operating officer Carlos Lorenzo Vega said.

Vega said the company currently delivers 17.4 MW of clean power to 11 data center facilities in the country.

He said data centers operate round-the-clock and are seeking renewable energy (RE) sources to provide their massive power demand and to cut carbon footprint.

The executive likewise acknowledged the challenge in the country’s energy mix, which is dominated by conventional power plants.

“There are data centers who are willing to take RE certificates. Okay, I’ll buy coal, but I make sure that I have RE certificates to basically offset,” he said on the sidelines of Data Center Association of the Philippines (DCAP) Executive Roundtable Summit 2025 in Makati City on April 29.

In the same event, First Gen Corp. assistant vice president Arlene Soriano said the anticipated growth of data centers in the country is a challenge for the energy sector to deliver reliable, low-emission, and cost-competitive electricity.

“Since data center is a high energy consumption, one of the largest contributors for their high carbon footprint is their energy consumption,” Soriano said. “And their energy consumption also leads to a higher operation expense.”

She said First Gen is positioning itself as a key supplier to data centers seeking clean energy to power their operations.

First Gen has 3.6-gigawatt portfolio of natural gas, geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar assets and has committed to developing 13 GW of clean power by 2030.
